The 7-day Machame Route is one of the most popular and highly recommended options for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This itinerary is designed to enhance acclimatization and increase summit success rates. The trek from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp is divided into two days, creating a shorter trekking day just before the summit attempt.
This schedule is particularly beneficial because summit night begins around midnight, making it the most physically and mentally demanding part of the climb. By having a lighter trekking day beforehand, climbers can rest properly and conserve energy, arriving at summit day better prepared and more refreshed for the final ascent.
Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate 1490m – Machame Camp 2980m

- Altitude Gain: +1,490 meters
- Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast and a final gear check, you’ll drive to the Machame Gate for registration. The trek begins with a steady climb through a lush rainforest. The path can be muddy and steep in sections. You’ll arrive at Machame Camp just above the treeline with first views of the mountain.
Day 2: Machame Camp 2980m – Shira Camp 3840m

You leave the forest and enter heathland. The trail becomes steeper and rockier as you ascend a ridge. You pass giant heather before reaching the Shira Plateau. Shira Camp offers wide scenic views.
Day 3: Shira Camp 3840m – Lava Tower 4630m – Barranco Camp 3960m

- Habitat: Alpine Desert
This is an important acclimatization day. You climb to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps altitude adaptation. The landscape is alpine desert.
Day 4: Barranco Camp 3960m – Karanga Camp 3995m

- Distance: ~5 km / 3 miles
- Altitude Gain: minimal net gain

You start by climbing the Great Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble. After reaching the top, the trail continues through valleys and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp 3995m – Barafu Camp 4673m

- Distance: ~4 km / 2.5 miles
- Altitude Gain: +678 meters
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
A steady climb to Barafu Camp, the summit base camp. The terrain is barren and rocky. You rest early, prepare gear, and sleep before the summit attempt.
Day 6: Barafu Camp 4673m – Uhuru Peak 5895m – Mweka Camp 3080m
- Hiking Time: 12–16 hours total
- Distance: ~16 km
Midnight start begins the summit attempt. You climb to Stella Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, you descend back to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp 3080m – Mweka Gate 1640m – Hotel
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Distance: ~10 km
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. You receive summit certificates (Gold for Uhuru Peak, Green for Stella Point), then transfer back to hotel for rest and celebration.
