5 Day Marangu Route – Climbing Kilimanjaro

5 Day Marangu Route – Climbing Kilimanjaro

Overview

  • Duration: 6 days / 5 nights
  • Travelers: 2 – 15 guests
  • Tour Type: Group tour, Private tour
  • Language: English

The 5-day Marangu Route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular options for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro due to its shorter duration and permanent mountain huts at each campsite. The hut accommodations provide added comfort compared to camping routes, making it a preferred choice for many climbers.

Summit night begins from Kibo Hut and follows a steep ascent to Gilman’s Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. As a shorter itinerary, the 5-day option features a steeper and more direct climb to the summit from Kibo base camp, making it physically demanding despite its popularity.

Marangu is also the only route where the ascent and descent follow the same trail, which can result in more traffic along the path. Covering approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles), the 5-day Marangu Route is best suited for fit climbers seeking a shorter climb with hut accommodations.
