Overview

  • Duration:7 days 6 nights
  • Travelers:2 - 15 guests
  • Language:English
The 7-day Lemosho Route is considered one of the most scenic approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro and offers excellent acclimatization, increasing the chances of a successful summit. This well-paced itinerary provides a balanced combination of breathtaking landscapes and steady altitude gain.

The trek begins on the western side of the mountain at Londorossi Gate, passing through lush rainforest before crossing the expansive Shira Plateau. As the journey continues, climbers traverse diverse climate zones, from heath and moorland to alpine desert, before making the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

For those seeking a slightly different approach, the Shira Route offers a variation that starts at a higher altitude, making it a more challenging option from the outset.

The 7-day Lemosho Route remains a highly recommended choice for climbers looking for outstanding scenery, solid acclimatization, and a rewarding summit experience.

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

You’ll begin with a scenic drive from Moshi to the remote northern trailhead at Rongai Gate. After registration and gear checks, your trek starts through farmland and into lush rainforest. The gentle ascent takes you toward the first high-camp at Simba, where rising elevation begins the acclimatization process and your guide will introduce you to mountain life.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Today’s walk continues steadily upward into moorland terrain. As the forest thins, expansive views open out across the plains and toward Kilimanjaro’s summit ice fields. The Second Cave Camp sits in a sheltered location, ideal for resting and taking in the growing highland atmosphere.

Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

A shorter trekking day through moorland and rocky paths leads to Kikelewa Camp, nestled near the base of the Mawenzi massif. This area offers striking views and a relaxed pace to aid acclimatization before higher elevations.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Today’s hike brings you deeper into alpine desert and closer to Kilimanjaro’s dramatic high terrain. Mawenzi Tarn is set beneath the rugged spires of the Mawenzi peak, providing a spectacular backdrop and a valuable opportunity to acclimatize further with shorter walks around camp.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Leave vegetation behind as you cross the high-altitude saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. This lunar-like landscape leads to Kibo Hut, your base for the summit push. The remainder of the day is spent resting and preparing for the final ascent.

Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Down to Horombo Hut

A midnight departure begins the most challenging but rewarding part of your climb. Ascend through arctic terrain toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim before continuing to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After celebrating at the summit, begin your descent to Horombo Hut,  a long but exhilarating day filled with unforgettable views.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

Your final day takes you down through moorland and rainforest, returning to Marangu Gate. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificates and enjoy a well-deserved transfer back to town, where showers, meals, and celebrations await
